The purpose of the GEAR process is to ultimately improve and increase the efficiency and effectiveness of disease elimination and eradication efforts by applying an independent review and evaluation framework. The GEAR process was piloted using the global onchocerciasis program, though its lessons can be applied across NTDs. The outcomes of this work fed into the design of the Global Onchocerciasis Elimination Network (https://www.who.int/initiatives/global-onchocerciasis-network-for-elimination) which held its first meeting in 2023.
