DEEC is a collaborative course that is offered to public health professionals and others and aims to improve participants’ knowledge on the principles of disease elimination and eradication and equip them with public health science, leadership and planning skills.
DEEC was first held in 2022 in partnership with the New York University School of Global Public Health (NYU SGPH) and involved a mixed cohort of public health students and professionals. In 2023, the course included support from The Carter Center, and in 2024, was offered twice on the African continent in partnership with the University of Global Health Equity in Rwanda and the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) in Ghana.
The DEEC is a hybrid course comprising a one-month online component and a seven day in-person component. The online portion is self-paced with a weekly moderated session– it introduces participants to key concepts that will be further discussed in person. The in-person segment focuses on the application of these concepts through active learning, group participation, and strategy co-creation.
In 2025, the GLIDE will launch an updated iteration of DEEC in collaboration with The Carter Center, and the University of Global Health Equity (UGHE). To accommodate growing interest and increase accessibility, the course will be held at the UGHE campus in Rwanda.
