In 2021, GLIDE launched its first call for proposals for the Falcon Awards for Disease Elimination, inviting disease elimination stakeholders in endemic countries to submit proposals that aim to accelerate the elimination of one or more of GLIDE’s four focus diseases: malaria, polio, lymphatic filariasis, and onchocerciasis. Four winning projects were selected to accelerate disease elimination in their respective countries.
This Falcon Awards initiative aimed to introduce innovative molecular detection technology and genomic surveillance of poliovirus in Pakistan and Afghanistan, which would be the first time such interventions would be used. The technology aims to help reduce the timeline of poliovirus testing to reporting from 21 to seven days through the testing and application of Deep Sequencing Technology.
