The Malawi Onchocerciasis Elimination Expert Advisory Committee

According to WHO 2016 guidelines on elimination, a country is required to establish an Elimination Expert Advisory Committee to provide technical advice on disease elimination to the Ministry of Health (MoH) in endemic countries. As a result of this guidance, the Malawi MoH appointed both local and international experts with expertise on onchocerciasis control and elimination as members of the Malawi Onchocerciasis Elimination Expert Advisory Committee in 2016.

Malawi Onchocerciasis Elimination Expert Advisory Committee meetings

The last Malawi Onchocerciasis Elimination Expert Advisory Committee meeting, which took place in 2017, helped to inform the transmission assessment activities that have taken place over the last three years — as well as GLIDE’s decision to support the Malawi Onchocerciasis Control Program to conduct further transmission assessments in Neno and Chiradzulu, where there were gaps in data. Now that these activities have been completed, GLIDE is supporting the Malawi Onchocerciasis Control Program (MOCP) to convene the expert committee meeting in 2021 to review results and chart a way forward for the elimination of onchocerciasis in Malawi.
