Eliminating Diseases video series

This series of four short videos produced by GLIDE profiles work in Pakistan, Cameroon, and the island of Hispaniola to eliminate preventable infectious diseases. The series focuses on disease prevention and GLIDE’s efforts to eliminate our current diseases of focus: malaria, polio, river blindness, and lymphatic filariasis.

Episode 1 – Polio: The Endgame

The first of our video series focuses on how close we are to polio elimination, which is endemic in only two countries – Afghanistan and Pakistan. If efforts in these countries are successful, polio will be only the second human disease in history to be eradicated.

Episode 2 – Onchocerciasis: The Long haul

Our second video looks at Cameroon’s efforts to eliminate river blindness (onchocerciasis). With many infectious tropical diseases, reaching the ‘last mile’ is often the hardest to achieve. Tracking the efforts and medication advice can be met with scepticism from some quarters of the population, halting elimination work and infection control.

Episode 3 – Beyond borders in the Dominican Republic and Haiti

The third video in the series provides an overview on the near elimination of lymphatic filariasis in Hispaniola and how cooperation and working across borders is key to eliminating the disease, along with malaria, on the island. The video follows the work of The Carter Center which works alongside ministries and departments of health in the Dominican Republic and Haiti to help accelerate the elimination of these diseases.

Episode 4 – Innovate to Eliminate

The final video in the series features interviews with scientists on the frontline of developing innovations to eliminate malaria and onchocerciasis, including the first-ever vaccination campaign against a human parasitic disease, RTS, S, and the implementation of the LoaScope in Cameroon.
